Viewpoint - Acorn Computers

This is the article where one of us gets to state our
views about some aspect of computing. But remember, its
not just QUANTUM members who can write this - why not send
me your viewpoint?
The last month has seen the release of many new
Archimedes computers, as Acorn updates the lower ranges
and targets new markets. In five years we've seen many
developments in the Archie ranges, which now include
processors with 3 different speeds, and 3 different
operating systems. At first these changes seem to be
great, but software compatibility is now starting to
become a real problem.
The range of different computers on sale is still
fairly small, but the rate of change is fast. Is this a
real problem?
The real boon of the Acorn range has been the amateur
enthusiast who has produced much of the software we use
